Faux Painting/Faux Finishing and Glazing

Faux painting or faux finishing are terms used to describe decorative paint finishes that replicate the appearance of materials such as marble, wood or stone. The term comes from the French word faux, meaning false, as these techniques started as a form of replicating materials such as marble and wood with paint, but has subsequently come to encompass many other decorative finishes for walls and furniture including simulating recognizable textures and surfaces.

Glazing is a technique employed by painters since the invention of oil painting. Although in theory, it is very simple, in practice glazing can be a very complex undertaking. In the simplest terms, glazing consists of applying a transparent layer of paint over another thoroughly dried layer of opaque paint, usually with a wide, soft-bristled brush.

Below are the different types of techniques that can be used when faux painting and glazing.

Color Washing with Glazes

Color Wash is a popular technique in faux painting using paint thinned out with glaze to create a subtle wash of color over walls or other surfaces. Color washing is an easy and forgiving form of faux finishing often used by beginners, but perfected by professional finishers.

Color Washing can be used to spruce up:

  • Bedrooms
  • Bathrooms
  • Nurseries
  • Kitchens
  • Any Accent Walls

Let Edwina create a custom one-of-a-kind glaze color to create a beautiful color wash wall in any part of your home.

Marbleizing or Faux Marbleing is the preparation and finishing of a surface to imitate the appearance of polished marble. It is typically used in buildings where the cost or weight of genuine marble would be prohibitive. Faux marbling is a special case of faux painting used to create the distinctive and varied patterns of marble - the most imitated stone by far.

Marbleizing is perfect for:

  • Pillars
  • Flooring
  • Fireplaces
  • Counters
  • Furniture

Metallic Painting

Metallic Painting is amazing – it's a way to add gorgeous shimmer and shine to virtually any project and is perfect for surfaces such as walls, ceilings, furniture, fabrics and even doors! Metallic Paints can either be sheer, semi-opaque or opaque. A professional paint finisher would know the coverage differences and the cool effects so they can create amazing effects with any color and sheers. For example, sheers are not meant to be used as a solid coat finish as they are a translucent paint used to create beautiful decorative finishes over another metallic paint color or over a low sheen acrylic or latex paint. When painting with metallics, opaques will take two coats and semi-opaques take three. Let your professional help you pick the right colors for the right project!

Metallic Paint is perfect for:

  • Accent Walls
  • Furniture
  • Cabinets
  • Picture Frames
  • Entry doors

Old World Painting

Old World Painting is a faux painting style that helps recreate the old world Tuscan feeling. This is a very popular style that requires skill.

Home to artistically designed buildings textured with stucco and plaster, and surrounded by beautiful landscapes and farms, the Tuscany region in the heart of Italy served as the birthplace to the Renaissance. Inside many of these architectural wonders, art by such greats as Michelangelo, Leonardo Da Vinci and Donatello fills your eyes with some of the very colors taken from the region. These colors are earthy warm and rich. They include deep rusty reds, rusty oranges, red browns, varying shades and tints of sage and olive greens, ochres in yellow-golds and light yellow-browns, cream beiges and deep earthy browns. Add one or more of these colors to your color palette when painting the interior of your home to simulate an old-world Tuscan look.

Old World Painting is perfect for:

  • Home study
  • Bathrooms
  • Living Room
  • Entryways
  • Kitchen
